Louisiana is a state located in the southern United States bordered by Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, and the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with lengthy, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters.

About Louisiana

The United States purchased the area of Louisiana from France under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The price was $11,250,000 (60 million francs) as well as $3,750,000 (18 million francs) in cancellation debts. This is the equivalency of $219 million in today’s dollars.

The purchase also included Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, parts of Minnesota west of the Mississippi River, a large portion of North Dakota, the majority of South Dakota, northeastern New Mexico, portions of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Continental Divide, and Louisiana west of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase also included the city of New Orleans, LA. Louisiana was admitted to the union on April 30, 1812 as the 18th state with a total land area of 51,843 sq miles.

The capital city of Louisiana is Baton Rouge with the largest city being New Orleans. Louisiana is also know at The Pelican State. The state bird is the Brown Pelican, the state flower is the Magnolia, and the state tree is the Bald Cypress. The state motto of Louisiana is
Union, Justice, and Confidence.
