Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the most common and most deadly cancer among men and women in the United States. Each year lung cancer takes more lives than colon, breast, prostate and lymph cancer combined. Cancer.gov states: …more than 222,000 new cases expected in the United States in 2010.

About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is cancer that forms in the tissue of the lungs. There are several types of lung cancer. Some of the most common types include small cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma, Adenocarcinoma, Large cell carcinoma, Bronchial-aveolar carcinoma and mixed and undifferentiated pulmonary carcinomas.

Small cell carcinoma tends to be the most aggressive form of lung cancer. It tends to spread faster than other types. Doctors classify lung cancer into two groups, small cell and non-small cell types of cancer due to the treatments offered. With non-small cell, it is possible to remove the cancer by cutting away the tumor. For complete details, check out Types of Lung Cancer at oncologychannel.com.

Leading cause of lung cancer is smoking. It is estimated that over 160,000 people die of lung cancer each year from smoking. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. Radon causes over 21,000 deaths per year. Radon is a natural radioactive gas that comes from the soil. It typically gets in homes through cracks in the foundation and trapping it inside. Second hand smoke is the third leading cause of lung cancer. It is estimated that there are over 3,000 deaths per year due to second hand smoke.
