Lynyrd Skynyrd is an iconic American Southern Rock Band known worldwide. The original members of the group included Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns. In the beginning they were known as My Backyard, The Noble Five and One percent. Their final name came about after joking about their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who told them they would never amount to anything.

Lynyrd Skynyrd played many gigs in night clubs, bars and college hot spots in the beginning. It wasn’t until 1973 when they finally made it to the big time after being discovered by Al Kooper. Al Cooper signed Lynyrd Snynyrd to MCA’s Sounds of the South label. Together they produced the first album entitled Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronounced 'L?h-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). This first album has gone platinum twice.

Some of the best known Lynard Skynyrd songs include Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama, That Smell, Saturday Night Special, Comin’ Home, and The Ballad of Curtis Loew. Free Bird is considered one of the top 10 Rock songs of all time and is the most played song of radio history.

At the peak of their career, Lynyrd Skynyd suffered a tragic loss. On October 20, 1977, three members of the band were killed in a plane crash. They were lead singer and co-founder Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and also the road manager Dean Kilpatrick. Other members were seriously injured. Following this tragedy the band took a hiatus for 10 years. In 1987, the band reunited and has since produced 7 albums. Cureent Members include, Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke, Johnny Van Zant, Michael Cartellone, Mark Matejka, Robert Kearns and Peter Key
