Maine is a state in the New England region of the United States bordered by New Hampshire, the Atlantic Ocean, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Maine has a humid continental climate with warm and humid summers and cold winters. Summer highs average 75–80 °F and winter highs average 20 °F. Maine’s record high temperature is 105 °F (41 °C), set in July 1911.

Maine was contended for during the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. The British forces occupied the eastern part of Maine after each conflict. The territory of Maine was confirmed part of Massachusetts when the United States was formed. Due to Maine’s rapid growth Maine became the 23rd state on March 15, 1820.

The total area of the state is 35,385 square miles. The capital city of Maine is Augusta with Portland being the largest city. Maine is also known as the The Pine Tree State. The state bird is the Chickadee, the state flower is the White Pine Cone and Tassel, and the state tree is the Eastern White Pine. The state motto of Maine is Dirigo which is Latin for I Direct or I Lead.
