About Marathon

A marathon is a race of 26 miles and 385 yards, or 42.195 kilometres, and is usually run as a road race. The first marathon was staged in 1896 as a way to generate publicity for the re-start of an annual Olympics event. At that time it was linked to the Greek soldier Pheideppides' run from the Battle of Marathon to Athens. Since then, the historical accuracy of that connection has been questioned and viewed as a legend.

The original race was a men's only event. The Olympics didn't include a women's marathon until 1984 at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Joan Benoit of the U.S. wont aht eart with ta time of 2:24:52.

Samuel Kamau Wanjiru of Kenya holds the men's Olympic marathon record at 2:06:32, set at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Naoko Takahashi of Japan holds the women's record of 2:23:14, set at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
