Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a hugely popular event and holiday celebrated to commemorate the last full day before Ash Wednesday during the season of Lent. Known also as Fat Tuesday, it is famous for parades in New Orleans and a night of hedonistic living.

About Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a holiday celebrated in association with the Catholic festive season of Carnival. Mardi Gras, which is French for ''Fat Tuesday,'' refers to the last night of eating rich, fatty foods, before observing the ritual fasting for Lent.

As part of the Catholic tradition, to especially respect the death of Jesus, a week of somber behavior and ritual fasting is practiced from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. During this period, sweet, rich, and fatty foods are traditionally given up. With time, the week before Lent transformed from a normal week into a chance to delve into glutinous and in some cases depraved behavior.

Especially known for its celebrated parades and nightlife in New Orleans, Louisiana, popular practices for Mardi Gras include wearing masks and costumes, dancing, sports, parades, and more. New Orleans, due to its French heritage, is a city well-known for its Mardi Gras celebrations.
