About Marilyn Monroe

Known for: Being one of the most iconic actresses and models in history.

Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jean Mortenson in Los Angeles, California. Her surname was soon changed to Baker by her mother which was the last name of her first husband. Some believe the name change was to prevent the assumption that the child was illegitimate but rumors still swirled about the parentage of the child. Financially unable to care for Norma Jean, her mother Gladys was forced to give her up to foster parents. Over the years Norma Jean was bounced between the care of her foster parents, her mother, her aunt and neighbors. Never having a stable home, Norma Jean suffered emotionally. She finally decided to marry in order to prevent herself from being forced into an orphanage. At the young age of 16 Norma Jean Baker married her first husband Jim Dougherty.

While her husband was away with the Army Norma Jean began to take modeling jobs to help support herself in the absence of her husband. She became very successful appearing on the cover of many magazines. When her husband returned home from the Army he wanted her to end her career to be home with him as his wife. Norma Jean, not happy with the thought of ending her successful career, opted for divorce instead.

It was not long before she was noticed by 20th Century Fox executive Ben Lyon. Fox was impressed with her skills and signed her into contract. Her name was changed to Marilyn Monroe as Norma Jean Baker did not have the sexy sound an actress needs. Marilyn Monroe went on to appear in such movies as Dangerous Years,’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,’ and Some Like it Hot'.

Marilyn’s career exploded and she became quickly engulfed in the Hollywood lifestyle. She circulated the scene, attending parties with other celebrities and appearing at many other high profile events. She married two more times; once to baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and then to playwright Arthur Miller. Her sexual image and fame were said to be contributing factors in the failure of both marriages. She has also been rumored to have been romantically involved with President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy, but the rumors have yet to be substantiated.

On August 5, 1962 the world was shocked to learn that Marilyn Monroe had died in her sleep at the young age of 36. An autopsy revealed that the drugs Chloral Hydrate and Nembutal were in her system prompting the coroner to rule her death as probable suicide. The true cause of her death remains a mystery today as many also consider her death to be a murder, possibly by the CIA or Mafia.

Today the memory of Marilyn Monroe still lives on. Her trademark blonde hair and skirt blowing scene from the film The Seven Year Itch’ have made her one of the most recognizable faces in the world today. She has become a part of cultural history and her image is often used in advertising, artwork, television and on stage.
