Maryland

Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region and is bordered by Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Oddly, the state has a variety of climates. The eastern part of Maryland experiences hot and humid summers and short, mild winters and the western areas of the state deals with snowier winters and mild summers. The center portion of the state falls between the two climates with both a hot summer and fairly snowy winters.

About Maryland

Maryland was named as such to honor Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I of England. Lord Baltimore created the colony for the purpose of creating a place for Catholics within the New World.It’s charter was granted in 1632. In the year 1788 Maryland became the 7th state to be admitted to the Union.

The capitol of Maryland is Annapolis, which is also home to the United States Naval Academy. The state has multiple nicknames; Old Line State, Free State, Little America and America in Miniature. Some even have called it The Bay State although that nickname is more commonly associated with Massachusetts. Maryland is the first state to name an official exercise. In 2008 walking was named as the official state exercise to promote the importance of exercise amongst its residents. It was also the first state to adopt and official sport. Jousting was named the official sport in 1962. The state bird is the Baltimore Oriole, which their baseball team is named after. The state flower is the black-eyed susan and the white oak is the state tree.

Maryland is known for its seafood, most specifically the blue crab. This delicious crustacean is caught in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and served at many a restaurant throughout the state. Visitors to the state rarely leave without sampling the crab cakes. Chock full of lump blue crab and Old Bay seasoning it is a treat that is not to be missed.

Maryland is home to many a vacation destination. Thousands flock to Ocean City where people can walk the boardwalk, boogie board in the surf and gobble up the famous steamed crabs. Baltimore is one of the most visited cities in the state. Here you can visit the National Aquarium, visit Fort McHenry or score the best seats at a football or baseball game. There is plenty of fine-dining, clubs, museums and cultural events to suit any taste. Western Maryland also draws many tourists. The serene setting is the perfect place to relax. Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County offers boating, fishing and water sports. Rent a cabin or vacation home on the lake for a week and let the stresses of everyday life melt away.
