Metallica

Metallica

Metallica is a thrash-metal band from Los Angeles, California, consiting of James Hetfield on vocals and guitar, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums and Robert Trujillo on bass. The band has sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

About Metallica

Metallica formed in 1981 after Lars Ulrich posted a wanted ad in the Los Angeles newspaper 'The Recycler.' The ad said, ''Drummer looking for other metal musicians to jam with Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head and Iron Maiden.'' A guitarist named James Hetfield answered the ad and they starting writing music together. They decided on the name ''Metallica,'' and posted a second wanted ad for a lead guitarist. The ad was answered by a guy named Dave Mustaine, and Metallica hired him after seeing his expensive guitar equipment.

In 1982, Metallica recorded its first song with Ulrich, Mustaine and Hetfield playing both guitar and bass guitar. The song was called ''Hit the Lights'' and Ulrich convinced Metal Blade Records owner Brian Slagel to add the song to a compilation he was putting out called 'Metal Massacre I.' The compilation created a buzz for Metallica and they hired Ron McGovney to play bass. He was replaced a year later by Cliff Burton.

In 1983, the band traveled to Rochester, New York to record its first album, 'Metal Up Your Ass.' Prior to the start of recording, they kicked Mustaine out of the band for his excessive drinking habits. Mustaine later formed the successful metal band Megadeth. He was replaced by Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett. The band changed the album's name to 'Kill 'Em All' and it was released by Megaforce Records.

Bassist Cliff Burton tragically died in 1986 after a bus crash in Sweden. The band considered breaking up but instead hired Jason Newsted to take on the role.

Metallica reached the height of its success in 1991 with the release of 'Metallica,' or 'The Black Album' as most people refer to it. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and sold 650,000 units in its first week. It contains the hit singles ''Enter Sandman,'' ''The Unforgiven,'' ''Nothing Else Matters,'' ''Sad But True'' and ''Wherever I may Roam.'' The success of 'Metallica' is credited for bringing thrash metal to the masses.

In 2003, Jason Newsted left the band and was replaced by Robert Trujillo of the band Suicidal Tendencies.

Metallica's latest album, 'Death Magnetic,' was released in 2008.
