Known for: Being the"King of Pop," and his weird wonderful ways, including remaining forever childlike
Michael Jackson started as the lead singer and youngest member of The Jackson 5 in 1964. He began his solo career in 1971 and in 1982, his album ‘Thriller’ sold more than 110 million copies, making it the best-selling album of all time.
Jackson's personal life was the subject of much controversy for years. People speculated over his changing appearance and his at times eccentric behavior. In 1993, he was accused of child sexual abuse, though no formal charges were brought at that time. In 2005, he was tried and acquitted of similar allegations.
On June 25, 2009, Jackson died from a drug overdose, while working on his latest project - a concert series entitled ‘This Is It.' His death was ruled a homicide by drug overdose due to the levels of propofol and lorazepam found in his system. His personal physician was formally charged with involuntary manslaughter. Jackson's death was felt all over the world and it is estimated that as many as a billion people may have watched his memorial service on television.
His achievements include:
Several Guinness World Records (including the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time),
15 Grammy Awards (including the Living Legend Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award),
26 American Music Awards (more than any other artist),
17 number-one singles in the US (including four as a member of The Jackson 5),
Estimated world sales of over 780 million records (more than any other artist)
Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice
