About Michelangelo

Michelangelo is one of the most renowned artists of the Italian Renaissance. He was born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni on March 6, 1475 near Arezzo, Caprese, Tuscany. He died February 18, 1564 in Rome, Italy at the age of 88. He was a sculptor, painter, poet and architect.

Michelangelo’s greatest works include the Pieta, the statue of David, and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The Sistine Chapel took four years to complete, and required Michelangelo to paint on lofted scaffolds, often on his back. Michelangelo never signed his work except for he Pieta. It is said that he overheard someone say another artist had made it so he signed the sash across the breast of Mary with ''Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine, made this.''

As an architect, Michelangelo’s most famous structure is that of the Dome at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. As a poet, his most many sonnets were dedicated to Vittoria Collona. Although many were written to Vittoria, it is believed that he was in love with two men during his lifetime: Gherardo Perini and Tommaso de' Cavalieri.

Michelangelo is buried at the The Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) located in Florence, Italy. It is also called Tempio dell'Itale Glorie (Temple of the Italian Glories) because other greats are buried there such as Galileo, Machiavelli, Foscolo, Gentile and Rossini.
