Minnesota is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. The twelfth largest state of the U.S., it is the twenty-first most populous, with 5.3 million residents. Minnesota was carved out of the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory and admitted to the Union as the thirty-second state on May 11, 1858.

Minnesota is the northernmost state apart from Alaska; its isolated Northwest Angle in Lake of the Woods is the only part of the 48 contiguous states lying north of the 49th Parallel. The state shares a Lake Superior water border with Michigan and Wisconsin on the northeast; the remainder of the eastern border is with Wisconsin. Iowa is to the south, North Dakota and South Dakota to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba to the north.

Minnesota endures temperature extremes characteristic of its continental climate; with cold winters and hot summers. The record high and low span is 174 degrees (from -60 to 114 degrees) Fahrenheit (span of 96C°; from -51 °C to 45 °C). Meteorological events include rain, snow, blizzards, thunderstorms, hail, derechos, tornadoes, and high-velocity straight-line winds.

Saint Paul, located in east-central Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River, has been Minnesota's capital city since 1849, first as capital of the Territory of Minnesota, and then as state capital since 1858. Saint Paul is adjacent to Minnesota's most populous city, Minneapolis; they and their suburbs are known collectively as the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the thirteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States and home to about 60% of the state's population. Minnesota offers an enticing selection of things to do for a vacation or quick getaway.

This Land of 10,000 Lakes is well known as an outstanding destination for outdoor fun. Minnesota has fine fishing waters, great golf, a bounty of hiking trails, and some of the best paved bike trails in the country. Family fun is the focus as water parks, zoos, amusement parks and you can’t forget about The Mall of America. There are also tours of mines and caves, plus scenic boat excursions. You will also find art, history and science museums.

Minnesota’s state bird is the Common Loon, the state flower is the pink and white lady’s slipper, the state motto is L'Etoile du nord which means The star of the north, the state tree is the red pine and the state song is Hail Minnesota. The state’s agriculture is known for its dairy products, corn, cattle, soybeans, hogs, wheat and turkeys. The state’s industry is known for its Machinery, food processing, printing and publishing, fabricated metal products, electric equipment, mining and tourism.
