Mississippi is a southern US state that was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817 as the 20th state. The state is named after the Mississippi river which flows in the western part of the state. Jackson, which is the largest city (173,861- 2008 population est.), holds the capital seat.

About Mississippi

Mississippi Climate

Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate. The summers are generally long with mild winter months. Temperatures average in the mid-80’s (F) in July to the upper 40’s in January. The area near the Mississippi sound is typically warmer in the winter months than the rest of the state.

Things to Do in Mississippi

Biloxi, MS in the Mississippi Sound provides many activities to enjoy the state’s waterfront area. Numerous casino results span the waterfront to try your luck or to just getaway from the everyday rat race. Biloxi also boasts some of the best sportsfishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Fish from snapper, flounder, and even sharks can be spotted here. Head over to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum to catch the Mississippi Surge, a southern professional hockey team league, hit the ice.

Farther north in the capital city of Jackson you can catch a show at the Puppet Arts Theatre or tee off at the Sonny Guy Golf Course. If this town is good enough for the governor, you know you will have a hard time getting bored here!

Car buffs will feel right at home at the Tupelo Automobile Museum in Tupelo, MS. This 120,000 square foot facility features over 100 cars from the 1880’s to present day. While you are in town you should head over to the Elvis Presley Birthplace & Museum where you will find items from Elvis’ childhood.
