Mother

Mother

A mother is a woman who is with child: either she has conceived, given birth, or raised a child.

About Mother

A mother can either be a biological or non-biological mother. Non-biological mothers include step-moms and surrogate mothers.

A Pew report compared the changing demographic characteristics of U.S. mothers in 2008 to those in1990. Here is what the study found, using data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the Census Bureau:

Marital Status: 41% of mothers weren’t married in 2008 while 28% of mothers weren’t married in 1990.

Race and Ethnicity: White women made up 53% of the mothers of newborns in 2008, down from 65% in 1990.

Age: Today, older mothers are more common than they were two decades ago. In 1990, 19% of mothers were teens while only 9% were women older than 35-years-old. In 2008, the reverse was true: 10% of births were to teens while 14% were to women over 35-years.

Education: Most mothers of newborns in 2008 had at least some kind of college education (54%) while only 41% had some college education in 1990.

Why?: When asked why they decided to have a child, the majority at 87% answered for ’the joy of having children’’ while 47% said ’there wasn’t a reason, it just happened.’’ Those are results only for 2008.
