Mothers Day

Mothers Day

On the second Sunday in May, Mothers Day is celebrated in the United States. It is a day to honor and celebrate Mom.

About Mothers Day

Mothers Day is celebrated in the U.S. on the second Sunday in May. The true intention of Mothers Day is not to shower mom with presents and gifts, although that doesn’t hurt, but it is to take the time to honor mothers and the act of motherhood.

Mothers Day sprang from several points of interest. Julia Ward Howe was one of the earliest proponents; her 'Mother's day Proclamation', published in 1870, was an anti-war statement that called on women to shape the course of society and oppose war. It was a reaction to the hundreds of thousands of sons lost in the Civil War.

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether our baptism be that of water or of tears!

Say firmly: 'We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.'

In 1914, after a publicity campaign by Anna Jarvis, the day became a national holiday. Jarvis would later come to oppose the holiday due to its over-commercialization.
