About NAGA World Championship
NAGA stands for North American Grappling Association and is the largest organization of its kind with over 46,000 members. NAGA, which is free to join, hosts North America's largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling tournaments. NAGA also hosts Mass Destruction and Reality Fighter amateur and professional MMA events. NAGA has over 100 accredited schools in the U.S. that follow the strict training program setup by NAGA.
Popular fighters to come through the ranks of NAGA are the imposing former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia standing at 6'8 and weighing in at 265 lbs. Another fan favorite of NAGA is Matt Serra, made popular via The Ultimate Fighter reality television show and later winning the UFC Welterweight Championship.
NAGA is different from MMA and UFC because of the scoring system it has in place. The main purpose of NAGA is submission and grappling, not a knockout, drag out fight like the UFC. While knockouts and being rendered unconscious are common endings to fights with NAGA, the main goal is to score points. Fighters are awarded 2 points for takedowns, sweep from guard, knee to stomach. Fighters may earn 3 points for passing guard to side position, and 4 points for rear mount position and mount position. Rules are broken up by gi and no-gi competition; however both are still very physical and very dangerous.
