National Parks

National Parks

A national park is a declared land area that is protected by the government from development and is designed for human recreation and preservation of beautiful natural resources.

About National Parks

The United States pioneered the first efforts to set aside nationally protected lands in 1832. President Jackson designated four sections of land around what is now Hot Springs, AK to protect the natural springs and mountainsides. However, it wasn't until President Lincoln signed an act of Congress in 1864 that the lands were nationally protected. In 1872, Yellowstone was designated as the world's first national park. Several other national parks became established over the years. In 1879,the Royal National Park was formed in Australia, with Rocky Mountain National Park in Canada (1885) and El Yungue National Park in Puerto Rico (1903), all to follow suit.

In 1909, there was a group of nine parks established in Sweeden, whereas Europe has approximately 359 national parks. Africa designated its first national park in 1925 by the Virunga Mountains as Albert National Park, which has since been changed to Virunga National Park. The Vanoise National Park in the Alps was considered the first French National Park in 1963. National Parks have been established all over the world since the close of World War II.
