The company was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight, and officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978. The company takes its name from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Some other popular brands Nike owns are Nike Golf, Nike Pro, Nike+, Air Jordan, Nike Skateboarding and subsidiaries including Cole Haan, Hurley International, Umbro and Converse.

Nike is also a big sponsor of pro-athletes and sports teams all over the world. They sponsor world class football clubs such as, Manchester United, Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus; they sponsor althletes including Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras, Trevor Immelman, Paul Casey and of course, Tiger Woods.
