Often, people relate nurses to hospitals, but that isn't the case as nurses can provide their assistance in nursing homes, doctor's offices or even for the local municipalities.

The job outlook for Registered Nurses (RN) is expected to grow about 22 percent within the next 10 years. We are currently facing a shortage within the United States of nurses. The shortage is so great in some areas that hospitals are offering sign on bonuses to experienced nurses in hopes to draw more people into the field. This, combined with the expected future growth of the field, puts a career in nursing something one that should seriously consider if any interests lie within the health care industry.

An RN is the primary care giver of a patient. They administer the treatments, care for the needs of their patients, answer all questions of the patient and family and are the point of contact for not only the families. Not only do they provide physical care to their patients, but they are often relied upon for emotional care as well. They are the ones who patients lean on when they are scared, hurt or sad. The job often comprises of long hours on your feet but it is found to be well worth it when the patient who came in so ill leaves your care with a smile on their face.

There are 3 types of educational programs available for those wishing to begin a career in nursing. A Bachelor’s of Science (4 years to complete), an Associate’s Degree (2 years) or a diploma (2-3 years) must be earned before you can begin practicing. It is widely recommended that prospective nurses choose to earn the Bachelors of Science degree as it contains more areas of training which can prove to be beneficial later when attempting to advance within the job field. Often, nurses will earn their Associate’s and enter the field while simultaneously completing the courses needed to earn their Bachelor’s.
