The Olympic Games are a major international event featuring summer and winter sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Games are currently held every two years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. The 2012 Olympics will take place in London, England.

About Olympics

Since 776 B.C. the Olympics have been the ultimate athletic competition.They were first celebrated in 776 B.C. and only had one event. It was a footrace called the stade, which is where the name stadium comes from. Gymnasium is another Greek word meaning school for naked exercise, ancient Olympians participated in the nude.

Modern Olympics were started by a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. He believed this would help with peace efforts between nations. The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece in honor of its origins.

The Olympics were separated by a period of 4 years which is called an Olympiad. Many countries began adding winter sports to the competition. In order to accommodate these events the IOC (International Olympic Committee) separated the games into the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics in 1994.

The flag of the Olympics represents the 5 major continents of the world and the colors were chosen because each of those colors are present in every flag of each nation. The motto for the Olympics is Faster, Higher, Stronger.

The 2012 Summer Games will be held in London, England starting July 25 and ending August 12
