About Oprah

Known for: Hosting talk show 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' which has become the highest-rated program of its kind on television.

In 1983, Oprah Winfrey moved to Chicago to host WLS-TV's low-rated half-hour morning talk show, 'AM Chicago.' The first episode aired on January 2, 1984. Within months of Winfrey taking over, the show went from last place in the ratings to overtaking Donahue as the highest rated talk show in Chicago. It was then renamed 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' expanded to a full hour, was broadcast nationally beginning September 8, 1986, and quickly become the number one talk show in America.

On November 19, 2009, it was announced that the 25th season of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' would be its last, with the final episode airing September 9, 2011.

Some of her more notable shows include a rare prime-time interview with Michael Jackson, which became the fourth most watched event in American television history with an audience of 100 million viewers and the first episode of the nineteenth season in which each member of the audience received a new Pontiac G6 sedan. Along with her successful show, Winfrey co-founded the women's cable television network Oxygen. She is also the president of Harpo Productions (which is Oprah spelled backwards).

Oprah publishes two magazines: 'O, The Oprah Magazine and O at Home.' She has co-authored five books as well.
