Ouija Board

Ouija Board

The Ouija Board started as a game, but eventually evolved into a spiritual communication device. Although the overall validity of spiritual communication is questioned, people to this day still believe it's one of the best methods for communicating with the dead.

About Ouija Board

Ouija is the trademark for a kind of 'talking board' called a Ouija (pronounced 'wee-jee') board. Participants ask the board a question and each person puts the fingertips of both hands on the plastic piece in the middle, a free-standing element. The piece slides along the board toward letters that spell out words. The combined forces of each person pulling or pushing the piece, even imperceptibly, make the piece move toward letters that quite often do spell out words. There are other symbols on the Ouija board as well.

For those that believe in it, the Ouija board is thought to provide answers about the future and one's fate. These answers, according to legend, are being provided by the spirits. The harmless activity of many a slumber party in the olden days when baby boomers were growing up, Ouija boards are, from time to time, accused of being tools of the devil. Recently Evangelical Christian groups have begun to issue alarms about the dangers of the Ouija Board.

The Ouija board and other 'talking boards' were often used during the 18th and 19th centuries, when some believed that the spirits of the dead walked around and could be consulted, even talked to, via seances. The Parker Brothers company patented the name Ouija board (rumored to be a combination of the French and German words for 'yes') and now it is viewed more as a toy.

Ouija Boards can be harmless and fun ways to find out what your friends are thinking (especially the friends that have their fingers on the plastic planchette along with you), but less effective in communicating with 'spirits'.
