Oxycontin

Oxycontin

OxyContin is a prescription pain medication that is very easy to get addicted to. It has been widely abused throughout the U.S. and is especially problem in rural America.

About Oxycontin

Oxycodone is the generic name for the brand name time-released pill OxyContin, produced by Purdue Pharma. Oxycodone is an opioid, and was first produced in 1916 as a replacement for other opioids like morphine. OxyContin was approved by the FDA in 1995 and available for prescription in 1996. In 2008, sales of OxyContin were over $2.5 billion.

Law suits in 2001 caused Purdue Pharma to suspend sales of oxycodone thanks to neglect in warning people of the addictive nature of its opioid pain killer. The drug is so high-strength that it has become a highly valued street drug, selling at about a dollar per milligram. This puts the street value at $40-$80 per tab.

In 2010, Purdue Pharma reformulated its time-released OxyContin to help reduce the risk for abuse of its drug. In the past people could get around the time release by crushing the tabs and snorting them. The new version releases the same amount of pain killer regardless of how it is ingested.
