Pain

Pain

Pain is an unpleasant experience we've all felt. Its the feeling we get when a toe gets stubbed, when lemon juice squirts in your eyes, or you forget to wash your hands before you go to the bathroom after cutting-up spicy peppers. It's the body's natural reaction to protect a healing part of the body, and to remind us not to do the thing that hurt us anymore. So pay attention to your body, because contrary to what Patrick Swayze said in 'Roadhouse,' pain does hurt.

About Pain

Pain is a weird thing. Usually it goes away once the body has healed whatever was hurting. Sometimes though, pain can hang around far longer than we feel it is necessary. For these situations, we have science to help us.

Pain is usually treated with some sort of anesthetic or an analgesic. Chronic pain however, takes a whole team to deal with, nurses and doctors, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists and occupational therapists.

The international Association for the Study of Pain claims that pain relief should be a human right, and chronic pain should be recognized as a disease. They also want pain medication to to have the full status of a specialty medication. In the U.S., pain meds are a sub-specialty under anesthesiology, neurology, palliative medicine and psychiatry.
