Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is cancer of the pancreas, also called exocrine cancer. It usually does not show any symptoms until it has advanced.

About Pancreatic Cancer

Cancer.gov estimates new cases and deaths from pancreatic cancer in the United States in 2010 will be:
New cases: 43,140
Deaths: 36,800

Risk factors for pancreatic cancer include smoking, age (over 60), diabetes, pancreatitis, family history and even race. Symptoms include upper abdominal pain, jaundice, weight loss, depression and possibly blood clots. Be sure to mention these symptoms to your doctor. It could mean many other things not only pancreatic cancer.

Treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on the stage, age of the patient and overall health along with other factors. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and clinical trials are treatments used for pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the top leading causes of cancer deaths. That is because it is usually not detected early enough and it is an aggressive form of cancer. When diagnosed the outcome is not very good.
