The Peace Corps was created during the administration of President John F. Kennedy to win the battle of 'hearts and minds' and use peaceful means to spread American influence around the world. Thousands of idealist young people joined to serve in hundreds of overseas locations.

About Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is a federal government agency which was established March 1, 1961. It began as a challenge by Senator John F. Kennedy to the Students of Michigan University in 1960. He challenged them to serve our country by living in underdeveloped countries offering aid in various ways.

Over the years it has grown tremendously with nearly 200,000 volunteers offering their service. Right now, the Peace Corps has over 7,600 active volunteers and trainees. They have served in over 139 countries. The average age of a volunteer is 28 years old and 93% of them are unmarried and 60% of the volunteers are female. Currently these wonderful volunteers are working in 77 different countries.

The areas of service by the volunteers range from Education to Health and HIV, Business Development, Environment, Agriculture, and Youth Development, plus other areas. These services are offered all over the Globe. The fiscal year budget for 2010 is $400 million.
