Pepsi

Pepsi

Pepsi (NYSE: PEP) is a carbonated soft drink that is Coke's direct competitor. Pepsi sales expanded enormously in the early 1960's when it ran the ad slogan 'Pepsi: For Those Who Think Young.'

About Pepsi

In 1883 pharmacist Caleb Bradham of New Bern, North Carolina concocted a drink that wowed his patrons. His pharmacy, like many others of that time, had a soda fountain where patrons could come in and have a cool drink. Brad liked to experiment with flavors and often mixed his own drinks to serve. His mix of carbonated water, kola nuts, vanilla and other oils became extremely popular with the customers. They nicknamed it Brad’s Drink. As sales of the beverage soared Brad renamed the drink Pepsi-Cola and he began a new company to market the tasty drink.

In 1923, despite its popularity Brad’s Pepsi-Cola Company went bankrupt. The end of World War II had caused the country to spiral into a depression and sales were not enough to keep them going. Craven Holdings Corporation bought the company, who in turn sold it to Roy C. Megargal. Despite their best efforts the company still floundered. Charles G. Guth bought Pepsi, and finally turned things around by selling more product for less money than their competitors sell. It was not long before he was able to expand Pepsi-Cola internationally. Through strategic marketing, catchy slogans, jingles, and celebrity endorsements the company has grown to the giant it is today.

The Pepsi we drink today is made of carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, caffeine, caramel color, citric acid, phosphoric acid and natural flavors. It has 150 calories, 41g of carbohydrates, 30mg of sodium and 38mg of caffeine.
