Perfume

Perfume

Perfume is what makes you smell fancy. Whether you're covering up some bad B.O. or just want a little hint of fragrance to attract a special someone, perfumes can give you your desired scent.

About Perfume

As many cosmetic products, perfumes, originally used for religious rituals and offerings to the gods, originated in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Later, they took on a more personal and cosmetic purpose in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Perfumes are concocted with a combination of essential oils or aroma compounds, as well as fixatives and solvents to round out the recipe. There are different levels of perfume concentration, based on the amount and types of aromatic compounds they contain, ranging from perfume extract (up to 40% aromatic compounds) to body splash and after shave (1-3% aromatic compounds).

Perfumes also have different stages of fragrances, called notes. There are three categories of said notes: top, middle, and base. Top notes are the scents you detect as soon as you spritz the perfume. Middle notes emerge when the top notes begin to fade (one reason you should wear a fragrance for a few hours before deciding if you like it) and compose the central scent of the perfume. When the middle scents begin to fade (about 30 minutes after wearing a perfume), the base notes become more apparent. Together, the base and middle notes create the essence of the scent. Base notes are said to give depth to a perfume.

There are various types of note scents that can be used to create any particular perfume. These foundational scents have many specific types, but are generally classified as a type of floral, citrus, fruit, wood or aquatic scent.
