Pete Rose

Pete Rose

Pete Edward Rose is a former Major League Baseball player and manager. Born April 14, 1941, he was nicknamed Charlie Hustle during his playing days. In spite of his stats he will never be voted into the Hall of Fame after being banned for life for gambling on games while he played for and managed the Cincinnati Reds.

About Pete Rose

Rose grew up in Cincinatti, OH and started playing baseball in high school at the insistence of his father. When it was time for him to graduate, his uncle, Buddy Bloebaum, was able to get him a place in the minor leagues. After floating around in the minors, Rose finally was able to play for the Reds and made a name for himself his first year with a .273 batting average and he won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He played mostly on the Reds with a few years playing for other teams including the Phillies and the Expos.

Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053) and outs (10,328).[1] He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B & 1B).

In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds, including claims that he bet on his own team. This inelgiblity make it impossible for Rose to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
