About Pirates of the Caribbean (Movies)

'Pirates of the Caribbean' is a saga following the 18th century bumbling pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by Johnny Depp, based on the popular Disneyland and Walt Disney World ride of the same name. The series also prominently features the characters Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), and Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

The first movie in the series, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' released on July 9, 2003. Blacksmith Will Turner (Bloom) reluctantly joins eccentric pirate ''Captain'' Jack Sparrow in order save the love of his life, the governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann (Knighteley), from a horde of cursed, undead pirates with whom Jack has a history.

Wildly successful, 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' was followed up with two sequels filmed simultaneously: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' (2006) and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' (2007).

'Dead Man's Chest' finds Jack cursed with a black spot which means if he does not recover the heart of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) his soul will be enslaved to Jones' service forever. However, Jack is not the only one interested in finding Jones' heart, as Will Turner discovers his father is trapped aboard Jones' ship, the Flying Dutchman.

'At World's End' sends Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann on a voyage to the edge of the world, where each of them, including Captain Jack, must decide where their ultimate alliances will lie in their quest for Davy Jones' heart and control of the Flying Dutchman.

Hinted at in the closing moments of 'At World's End,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' (2011) finds an obsessed Jack Sparrow and Barbossa on a quest to find the mythical fountain of youth, only to discover that the heinous pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his con-artist daughter, Angelica (Penelope Cruz), with whom Jack has a part, are after it too.
