Pregnancy cramps

Pregnancy cramps

Pregnancy changes every aspect of your body. However, many of these changes are gradual over the duration of the pregnancy. One of the first symptoms a pregnant woman may experience are cramps. These cramps are different from the cramps one experiences during menstruation; they are the result of implantation of the fertilized egg, the stretching of the uterus and ligaments, or gas/constipation. Unfortunately, sometimes cramping in early pregnancy can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, or a miscarriage.

About Pregnancy cramps

When a fertilized egg attaches to a woman's uterus, many times a woman will feel a slight cramp, as well as some light, bloody spotting. This usually occurs between 8 – 10 days after the egg is fertilized. If a woman is experiencing her first pregnancy, she may not associate this cramping with pregnancy; however, many women who are have already had children can recognize this sensation and know they are pregnant before a test is even taken.

Before a woman is pregnant, her uterus is only 3 – 4 inches in length. Over the course of 9 months, the uterus stretches to over 12 inches! This stretching is not a painless process. The ligaments that support the uterus must also stretch and grow. This is also known as round-ligament pain, and almost all pregnant women experience this sensation at some point in their pregnancy.

Sometimes cramping in pregnancy can be a simple case of gas or constipation. A pregnant woman's digestive system is compromised and many experience gas or irregular bowel movements, both which can result in uncomfortable cramping.

Lastly, cramping can be an indicator of early problems such as an ectopic pregnancy (a serious condition when the fertilized egg implants inside the fallopian tube instead of inside the uterus) or a miscarriage (when the fetus or fertilized egg fails to thrive and is lost). However, most cramping is rather common and is an indicator of a healthy, normal pregnancy.
