Pregnancy Test

Pregnancy Test

A pregnancy test is a convenient and accurate way to see if someone is pregnant. At-home tests are performed by the woman urinating on the stick, which intern determines if the hormone (HCG) is present. If HCG is detected, then the pregnancy test will reveal it either by a color change, or digitally depending on the type of test. Most tests are accurate 99% to 100% of the time, but there are still conditions which can produce a false negative.

About Pregnancy Test

At-home pregnancy tests help determine if you are pregnant. They are very accurate (99 – 100%) if they are used correctly; however, they can give false readings if the test is taken too early, or if the test has expired. For the best results, you should take a pregnancy test after you miss your period, but some tests are so accurate that they can be taken a few days before you expect your period.

You might be wondering how a pregnancy test works. A typical, at-home pregnancy test uses your urine to determine if you are pregnant. You see, a hormone is released (HCG) 6 to 12 days after a fertilized egg implants itself to the lining of a woman's uterus. Pregnancy tests look for this hormone in your urine. Most pregnancy tests are sensitive enough to recognize this hormone when taken at any time during the day, but most recommend that the test is taken first thing in the morning when you use the restroom for the first time.

How you take the test is important for a correct reading. Urine-based pregnancy tests require you to use your urine to determine if you are pregnant. It is best to take the test first thing in the morning when the HCG hormone is most concentrated in your urine (remember, that's the pregnant hormone!). You can either urinate on the pregnancy test stick, or urinate into a cup and place the pregnancy test in the cup for the correct amount of time. Wait a few minutes and check the marks (they will vary depending on the brand) for either a positive (pregnant) or negative (not pregnant) reading.

You can buy pregnancy tests at almost all drugstores, as well as supermarkets and superstores. They range in price depending on the brand, but most fall between $12 - $15. Some tests are digital, while more traditional ones simply give you an ink mark such as one or two lines, or a plus/minus symbol.
