Presidents Day

Presidents Day

Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February. The holiday celebrates all Presidents. In 2011, Presidents Day will be celebrated on February 21.

About Presidents Day

Presidents Day evolved from years of various legislation. The first legislation came out of Act of Congress in 1880 for government offices in D.C. honoring George Washington. The bill expanded to 1885 to include all federal offices, and was the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen. The day was set to February 22nd.

Under the Eisenhower administration, their was a proposal to celebrate all President's, with March 4 the date. The bill was introduced but stalled in the Senate after they concluded that three federal holidays in a short time span would be burdensome. In 1971, the federal holiday shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, placing the date between February 15 and 21. However in the 1980's, advertisers used the term ''Presidents's Day'' for advertisements and sales.
