About Pro Football

A combination of soccer and rugby, American football was played in its first official college game by Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1869. But college football was only the beginning. As athletic clubs began to compete, more and more money was paid to football stars to keep them on the team.

The official birth of pro football is now recognized as November 12, 1892, when the Allegheny Athletic Association football team defeated the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. William Pudge Heffelfinger, a member of the Allegheny Athletic Association, Pittsburgh, was paid $500 for one game on November 12, 1892.
