Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a cancer that affects the prostate gland, in the male reproductive system. It is the second most common cancer in American men, with over 186,000 men learning they have the disease annually. Skin cancer is the only cancer more common than prostate.

About Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate gland found in men. It is found most in men over 75 but it can affect men at any age. Cancer.gov estimates new cases and deaths from prostate cancer in the United States in 2010 will be:

New Cases: 217,730
Deaths: 32,050

The cause of prostate cancer is unknown but it is more likely to occur in men with a fatty diet. MedlinePlus states that people who are at higher risk include:

African-American men
Men who are older than 60
Farmers
Tire plant workers
Painters
Men exposed to cadmium

The lowest number of cases occurs in Japanese men and those who do not eat meat (vegetarians).

Symptoms of prostate cancer usually show up in the urinary tract such as constant urination at night, or urination retention, pain when urinating or ejaculating, blood in urine, urinary dribbling, lower back pain and urinary leakage to name a few.

Treatments for prostate cancer depend on the stage and age of the patient and other factors. The most common treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapy. Alternative therapies are also available. You can also check out clinicaltrials.gov for other options.
