Quit Smoking

Many people choose to quit smoking, in order to regain control over their health. Smoking is a very expensive habit as well. Many methods are used to quit smoking, from 'cold turkey', to nicotine patches, to hypnosis and other methods.

About Quit Smoking

In the United States and estimated 25.9 million men and 22.8 million women are smokers. Each year more than 400,000 people die from smoking related diseases. An estimated 1.3 million Americans quit smoking each year and lessen the risks of their contacting cancers, heart problems and other smoking related illnesses.

There are many different methods used today to aid in smoking cessation. One of the most popular methods is cold turkey. Cold turkey is when the smoker decides that they are going to just stop smoking, without the aid of drugs or programs. It is one of the most difficult methods and is also the least successful.

Another popular method is the use of nicotine patches or nicotine gums. The patch, when placed on the body, will release small amounts of nicotine into the system to help reduce the cravings. The gum will do the same thing, but only when chewed. The goal is to use the nicotine replacement methods in order to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day. Eventually the person also reduces the use of nicotine replacement gently weaning themselves off nicotine until their body no longer craves it.

Electronic cigarettes are the latest method to help people quit smoking. The electronic cigarette is a device shaped to resemble a cigarette that allows a person to inhale nicotine or non-nicotine vapors. The cigarette is battery powered and has a heating element inside to create the vapor. The electronic device mimics the act of smoking, without the harmful chemicals and smoke of a real cigarette.

Other methods used to quit smoking include hypnosis, self help books, group therapy, singular therapy, acupuncture, spirituality and just plain cutting down gradually until the need goes away. Whatever the method used the target is always the same. Stop smoking. If one method fails don’t give up. Give yourself a chance to find the method that works best for you.
