Ramadan

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy time in which Muslims fast for a full month while teaching and practicing patience, humility, self-control and spirituality. It is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar.

About Ramadan

Ramadan is a time to practice self-control, to focus on spiritual connection with Allah, and to devote time to others in need. Practicing Muslims perform various rituals throughout each day, but Ramadan is mostly known for the ritual of fasting -- healthy Muslims do not eat, drink, or have sex between dawn and sunset each day. In certain circumstances, one can be exempt from fasting. For example, if a Muslim is sick he/she is not obligated to fast but should make it up later if they can.

The fasting during Ramadan is intended to teach patience, humility, and spirituality. It is a time to fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayers than usual. Muslims must ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. It also teaches Muslims to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; thus encouraging actions of generosity and charity

The name Ramadan had been the name of the ninth month in Arabian culture long before the arrival of Islam. As compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards about ten days each year depending on the moon. Muslims believe Ramadan to be the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam and to avoiding obscene and irreligious sights and sounds. Sexual activities during fasting hours are also forbidden. Purity of both thoughts and actions is important. The fast is intended to be an exacting act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised awareness of closeness to God.
