About Randy Couture

Born: Randy Duane Couture, June 22, 1963, Everett, Washington

Randy Couture wrestled his way through high school and won the State Championship his senior year. Upon graduating from high school he joined the Army where he used boxing to offset the physical training. He was working as a wrestling coach for the University of Oregon when he first spotted a video of a UFC fight and decided that fighting professionally was the path he should take.

Randy made his UFC debut on May 30, 1997 in Augusta, Georgia where he won both of his fights in the mixed martial arts arena. He soon became a force to be reckoned with as with using his skills as a wrestler, martial artist and boxer Couture strategically was winning fights left and right. That first year he earned the title of UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Couture went on to win another Heavyweight Championship title as well as two Light Heavyweight Championships. On February 4, 2006 he announced his retirement after a match against Chuck Liddell in which he was knocked out. In June 2006 Couture was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Retirement didn’t last long for Randy Couture. He returned to the ring in 2007 where he again earned the Heavyweight Championship title after a win against Tim Sylvia. The win also made him the first fighter to become a three-time champion. However, in October of 2007 Couture announced he would be resigning from UFC citing a dispute with the company. In 2008 he again returned to UFC to fight Brock Lesnar and still continues fighting today.

In addition to UFC fighting, Couture is also an actor. He has appeared in the films The Scorpion King 2: Rise of the Warrior’ (2008), Big Stan’ (2009) and The Expendables’ (2010). He also opened his own gym franchise in 2006 called Xtreme Couture. The training facility can be found in Las Vegas, Nevada, Wellington, Florida, Lombard, Illinois, Vancouver, Washington and Toronto, Ontario.
