Red Bull

Red Bull

Red Bull is an adaptation of the Thai energy drink Krating Daeng, which translates as Red Bull. It is currently the most popular energy drink in the world.

About Red Bull

Red Bull is an energy drink created by Chaleo Yoovidhya and Dietrich Mateschitz. In 1982, Mateschitz developed the formula for Red Bull after he experienced a similar energy drink called Krating Daeng in Thailand. Together with Yoodvidhya, they created the company called Red Bull GmbH, developed the product and officially launched Red Bull in Austria in 1987. It launched in the United States in 1997.

The active ingredients in Red Bull are taurine, glucuronolactone, caffeine, B vitamins, sucrose and glucose. The sugar-free version omits the sucrose and glucose and replaces it with phenylalanine. Red Bull Cola, another product of Red Bull GmbH contains coca leaf. Coca leaves contain cocaine but studies have shown that the euphoric effects do not occur when the leaf has been brewed. Despite the lack of effects from the coca leaf studies have also shown that when the leaf is used tests show a small amount of cocaine present within the bloodstream. Red Bull sparked controversy in Germany and was banned in parts of the country. A person would have to drink 2 million cans in one sitting before any effects from the cocaine are felt.

Researchers have warned those who have atherosclerotic disease, high blood pressure or high stress levels against consuming Red Bull products. Studies found that one can of sugar-free Red Bull had an immediate effect on endothelial function and blood coagulation. This raises the cardiovascular risk and can be very problematic for those already at risk. In 2009 a 21 one year old woman died after drinking four cans of Red Bull mixed with alcohol. The woman may have also suffered from an undiagnosed heart condition and that the amounts of caffeine placed into her system pushed it over the limit. Red Bull claims that its product is completely safe and is no different than drinking a cup of coffee.

Despite the controversies, Red Bull continues to dominate the energy drink market and about 4 billion cans of the drink are consumed each year. The success of the drink and its company has provided 6,900 people with jobs.
