Downey first became noticed in Hollywood for his role in 'Less Than Zero' (1987). After success in that film, Downey started landing larger roles in movies such as 'Air America' (1990) and 'Soapdish' (1991). These bigger roles led to his being cast as Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 film 'Chaplin', for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
Between 1996 and 2001, Downey was frequently arrested on drug-related charges and went through several drug treatment programs. After achieving true sobriety, his career began to take off again. He appeared in independent films such as 'The Singing Detective' and 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'. He also had supporting roles in some bigger films such as 'Gothika' and 'Zodiac'.
After seeing Johnny Depp starring in 'Pirates of the Caribbean', Downey decided he wanted to tackle a fun family action movie of his own. Step up 'Iron Man' (2008). As the cocky, suave, arrogant, genius billionaire engineer Tony Stark, Robert Downey, Jr became the Marvel Comics superhero Iron Man. The movie was a smash hit at the box office and with audiences, surpassing expectations greatly. A trilogy of 'Iron Man' films was announced shortly thereafter, as well as the Marvel superhero movie spin-off, 'The Avengers' (2012).
Some of Downey's other works include 'Tropic Thunder' (2008), 'The Soloist' (2009), and 'Sherlock Holmes' (2009), all of which were successful at the box office and with critics.
