About Ron Paul

Ron Paul gained early interest in politics after reading the economist Friedrich Hayek's ''The Road to Serfdom.'' He would later read books by other libertarian authors, such as Ayn Rand and Ludwig von Mises.

Ron Paul was the first Republican Representative from the 22nd district in Texas, serving from January 1977 to 1985, surprising the Democrats that were expecting an easy victory in the wake of the Watergate Scandal. Ron Paul ran for the Senate in 1984, but lost. In the process, he lost the primary and returned to practicing medicine full time. In 1988, he campaigned for Libertarian Presidential nomination and defeated Russell Means to secure the nomination. After the election he returned to private practice. In 1996, Ron Paul returned to politics and won a close race in Texas 14th District.

Political Positions
Ron Paul is known for adhering to the Constitution and being a libertarian. Ron Paul has a foreign policy of nonintervention, making him the only Republican who did not support the War in Iraq. He advocates withdrawing from the United Nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) over maintaining strong national sovereignty. He supports free trade, but rejects membership in NAFTA and WTO. He claims to have never voted for a budget deficit or raising taxes.

Paul ran for President as a Libertarian in 1988, and for the Republican nomination in 2008. He announced on May 13, 2011 that he would be again seeking the Republican Party's nomination for President for the 2012 election.
