About Russia
The first Russian empires arose in the 9th century, the Kievan Rus', and over the centuries it has grown into one of the most powerful nations on the planet. By the 18th century the Russian Empire was the 3rd largest empire in history, stretching from Alaska to Poland.
The Russian revolution in 1905 created the first constitutionally socialist nation as communism swept through the country, creating the USSR or Soviet Republic.
While the Soviets were a key ally in World War II, soon after the war the US and USSR began the 'Cold War' in which the size, quality, and quantity of the weapons held by the two rival superpowers made it dangerous to even consider a direct war between them. The two nations instead confronted each other by empowering and supporting other nations, with the Soviets exporting Communism to China, North Korea, Cuba, and several other countries, and the US supporting the rivals of those nations.
In 1991 the Cold War ended as the Soviet Union collapsed and a new Russian Federation was born.
