'Saturday Night Live' (SNL) was developed as a late-night sketch comedy show by Lorne Michaels and first aired on October 11, 1975 with the title 'Saturday Night.' Some of the most successful comics in American comedy have soared to fame there, including John Belushi, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and many others.

Comedy group The Lonely Island, made up of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva ''Kiv'' Schaffer, became involved with the series in 2005 with a running series of videos referred to as 'SNL Digital Shorts.' The second digital short video, ''Lazy Sunday,'' achieved high levels of success.

Lorne Michaels has produced the show every season except five since its inception. 'SNL' has spawned popular movies, including 'The Blues Brothers' (1980), 'Wayne's World' (1992), 'Wayne's World 2' (1993), 'Coneheads' (1993), 'It's Pat!' (1994), 'Stuart Saves His Family' (1995), 'A Night at the Roxbury' (1998), 'Blues Brothers 2000' (1998), 'Superstar' (1999), 'The Ladies Man' (2000), and 'MacGruber' (2010). In addition, the movie 'Office Space' grew out of a series of animated short films that aired on SNL.
