Scam

A scam is the act of swindling by a fraudulent scheme or plan. It can also refer to the verb as in 'he was scamming people by pretending to be a lawyer'. In the internet age many scams have succeeded in getting people to give away their personal information or even to send money to fake bank accounts.

About Scam

Scams are everywhere and not only on the internet. There are many different types of scams that affect our lives every day. In David Kruger’s book The Secret Language of Money, he discusses types of scams to be on the lookout for. Some of them are:

Soft Scams, a misrepresentation of an actual company or business.
Hard Scams, con artist uses fake companies or products to acquire investments.
Bad Investment Scams, con artist convinces investors that the company or products are of little risk and offer a high return.
Affinity Scams, con artist claims to be associated with religious, ethnic or professional groups.
Identity Theft Scams, con artist steals the identity of a person and opens lines of credit and many other heinous crimes.
Internet Scams is one of the biggest scams out there, they steal personal information, claim to be a distant relative offering you money and so on.
Pyramid Schemes rely on continuous recruitment of investors and paying a fee.

Today, many people have access to computers, and the internet is a great way for con artists to scam potential victims. Emails making monetary claims lure thousands of people on a daily basis into a scam. According to Snopes.com these are the most widely known internet scams:

Nigerian Scam: A wealthy foreigner who needs help moving millions of dollars from his homeland promises a hefty percentage of this fortune as a reward for assisting him.
Foreign Lottery Scam: Announcements inform recipients that they've won large sums of money in foreign lotteries.
Secret Shopper Scam: Advertisers seek applicants for paid positions as 'secret' or 'mystery' shoppers.
Work-at-Home Scam: Advertisers offer kits that enable home workers to make money posting links on the Internet.
Family Member in Distress Scam: Scammers impersonate distressed family members in desperate need of money.
