In areas of high concentrations of Jewish communities like New York and Cleveland, students are given the Jewish Holidays off. Many schools will close school for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. If there is a large Muslim population, they may get Ramadan as a day off from school. Many schools also close for the Christian holidays of Christmas and Good Friday. By allowing the different religious groups to have their holidays off, it opens the door for conversations with each other about their beliefs, leading to better relationships with each other.
