Sears

Sears

Sears (NYSE: SHLD), a major retailer with a colorful history, was the largest retailer in the United States as it entered the midpoint of the 20th century. In more recent years it has evolved to be a major online retailer and a trusted source for tools, appliances and affordable clothing and other goods.

About Sears

Sears was originally known as Sears, Roebuck & Company. It was founded in the late 19th century by Alvah Curtis Roebuck and Richard Warren Sears. It was in the forefront of supplying a growing nation with the goods it needed. Its mail order marketing techniques became highly sophisticated and the company was a major presence in its home town, the city of Chicago.

In the 80's and 90's, Sears began to suffer as big box stores expanded, tastes changed to more niche fashion products, and it lost its customers to many competitors. In the 21st century, Sears struggled to find its feet, having discontinued its catalog. In early 2005, Sears merged with Kmart and created the Sears Holdings Corporation.
