Selection Sunday

Selection Sunday

Selection Sunday is an annual event that publicly releases the findings of the committee that the NCAA appoints to select the teams, seeds, and regional placement for the NCAA Tournament, also known as March Madness.

About Selection Sunday

The committee consists of 10 individuals that serve as either a Conference Commissioners or Athletic Director of an NCAA Division 1 University. Both Major (Big Ten, Big 12, etc) and Mid-Major (Big Sky, Horizon League) Universities are represented to ensure all teams are evaluated fairly.

The committee has the hard task of seeding 65 teams in the bracket. Schools may secure one of thirty guaranteed spots in the tournament by winning their Conference Tournament. The Ivy League Schools, which have no Conference Tournament, send their regular season Champion. The other 34 spots go to At-Large Bids.

At-Large Bids are determined by taking into account strength of schedule (RPI), ranking, and how teams finish their season. Typically At-Large Bids go to teams from the ACC, A-10, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, C-USA, Pac-10, and the SEC. They also go to teams that are in the Top 25 that were upset in their respective Conference Tournament.
