About Shakira

Shakira was born in Colombia in 1977. She has eight half-brothers and sisters and is of Lebanese, Italian and Spanish decent. Shakira enjoyed writing poetry as a little girl and her poems eventually turned into songs.

In 1990, at the age of thirteen, Shakira recorded her first album 'Magia.' The album generated some buzz in Colombia but only sold 1,200 copies worldwide. She recorded three more albums in Colombia but still did not find success outside of Latin America.

On November 13, 2001, Shakira released the English language album 'Laundry Service.' Thanks to the success of Selena, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias, she was welcomed with open arms into the American music industry. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts and sold 200,000 copies in its first week. It featured the singles Whenever/Wherever and The One.

Shakira released her seventh album, 'The Sun Comes Out,' on October 19, 2010.
