Sharks

Sharks

Sharks have fascinated and terrified man for thousands of years. Although 'shark attack' is one of the ways media companies get attention, only 10-15 people are killed by sharks each year, while humans kill over 100 million sharks annually. Many shark populations are threatened with extinction.

About Sharks

Sharks are a form of fish in the Chondrichthyes class. Chondrichthyes have a skeleton made of cartilage, jaws, paired fins, and paired nostrils. These fish date back 420 million years ago before dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Sharks Habitat
Sharks are best found in shallow coastal habitats, deep ocean floor habitats, and the open ocean. They also inhabit tropical and temperate seas and some in cold and polar seas. Shark migration is vaguely understood and not all species migrate.

Sharks Size
Shark sizes are typically very diverse. The largest of the sharks is the whale shark at 45-ft in length. The midwater shark is one of the smallest sharks from 8-10 inches in length.

Shark Attacks
Sharks are best known to attack predators. The concept was featured in the movie Jaws. A shark attack is a rarity and the discomfort caused by them has been exaggerated by movies and stories about Shark attacks. Since 1670 the United States has had 1,049 attacks caused by sharks. In general sharks do not have cravings for humans and prefer meals with high-fat meat for sharks.
