About Slum Dog Millionaire

Jamal Malik is an 18 years old man from the slums of Mumbai who is moments away from winning 20 million rupees on the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati?’ which is the Indian version of America’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire.’ Just before he gets to the winning answer he is arrested.

Officials suspect that he is cheating. They cannot believe that a boy from such a poor neighborhood could possibly have the knowledge that Jamal has shown during the game show. Jamal recounts his life, experiences and adventures to the police to show how he gained the knowledge to prove his innocence.

Directed by Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire’ was set and filmed in India. The film was a hit earning $141,319,195 in the United States. The movie was also shown in European, Australian, Indian and Asian-Pacific countries. In Japan Slumdog Millionaire’ became the highest grossing movie ever in that country. 'Slumdog Millionaire' went on to crown all its successes with 8 Academy Award wins, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. It also won 7 BAFTAs, 4 Golden Globes and 5 Critic’s Choice Awards.

Slumdog Millionaire also brought attention to the welfare of children living in the slums of India. Two of the child actors in the film were cast from those poor areas depicted in the film. The filmmakers claimed that the children were duly compensated for their work and had set up trust funds for the children for their education. The father of Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail demanded more money after the film became successful. He desired the filmmakers to provide his son with a new house so the family could move from the slums. He claimed that the money given to his child was spent on medications for his own health problems. On 25 February 2009, the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority announced that both Azharuddin and Rubina would be given free houses. The filmmakers contributed by hiring social workers to help oversee the children’s move to their new homes.
